Scientists have found that eating potatoes while exercising is just as effective as consuming special carbohydrate gels. A simple meal maintains blood glucose. Previous studies have shown that carbohydrate gels really increase the effectiveness of training. Scientists decided to explore an alternative to these commercial products. They chose potatoes puree as an alternative to sweet gels.

The scientists made an experiment with 12 experienced and well-trained cyclists. They were divided into 3 groups: cyclists who consumed only water, those who consumed carbohydrate gel and participants that consumed an equivalent amount of carbohydrates obtained from potatoes. All participants had to complete a 120-minute bike ride and time trial. The experiment has shown that potatoes and commercial gels significantly increase athletic performance while water consumption does not affect athletic performance.

The experiment reflected typical race conditions, the team monitored participants' blood glucose, body temperature, and other indicators. It turned out that there were no differences in performance between participants from the second group and from the third. These two groups showed much better performance results compared to the first group. However, one drawback was also found. Those athletes who ate potatoes were more likely to experience discomfort in their stomach and intestines.
