Viruses, allergens and other harmful substances crowd in the air. They are everywhere. You can catch them, when anybody coughs near you in the bus or supermarket, or if you inhale certain flower pollen.

Fortunately our body has special mechanisms to protect itself from penetration of foreign chemicals and infection. It produces mucus, which covers the lining of mouth, pharynx, nose, sinuses and digestive tract. When viruses or other irritants try to invade to your body, it begins to synthesize more mucus. Excess of mucus, created in the respiratory system, is called phlegm.

This problem usually occurs, when you experience common cold, allergy or side effect of certain drugs. Excessive production of phlegm and mucus is not a life-threatening disorder, but it can be uncomfortable and annoying enough.

The good news is that you can get rid of this problem even without going to your doctor. Here are some useful tips to help you reduce too-much-of-mucus trouble:

#1. Drink enough – warm fluids like tea, lemon water and chicken broth can help you thin the phlegm and relieve congestion.

#2. Go for humidifier – it's worth buying humidifier in the drug store, as steam can really alleviate annoying symptoms of excessive mucus production and support elimination of the phlegm.

#3. Try essential oils – it was found that lemon grass, eucalyptus and thyme essential oils can improve mucus loosening. You can try to apply it on your chest area or to diffuse into the room air with the aid of special diffuser.

#4. Use salt water – try this helpful tip to clear your phlegm and relieve sore throat. Dissolve ½ to ¾ teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Make a little sip of this mixture, but don't drink it. Tilt the head, gargle for several seconds and spit out the beverage.

Try respiratory-friendly foods and supplements – some studies show that licorice root, ginger, garlic, pomegranate, ginseng, chili peppers and echinacea can be beneficial in clearance of your mucus. These remedies can work properly or appear inefficient in different people. Try them in order to recognize, if they are effective for you personally.

#6. Choose over-the counter medication – decongestants can help decrease amount of the mucus, which flows from your nose, when you’re ill. The most widespread of them are oxymetazoline, phenylephrine and pseudoephedrine. Another type of medicines is called expectorant (guaifenesin). It can thin the mucus and expel it. Follow the instructions on the packaging to use these medications as needed.
