Menopause is a natural stage of woman's life, when production of the female sex hormones gets ceased. Your ovaries reduce synthesis of estrogen and progesterone gradually. Between 45 and 55 years their levels become too low to cause ovulation and menstruation. When your menses are absent for twelve months, it means that you've eventually reached menopause.
The average American woman enters the menopause at the age of 51. Sometimes women may experience menopause before they've celebrated their 45. Medical specialists call it early menopause.
There is a wide variety of reasons, why do ovaries stop to produce hormones earlier. The most common of them include genetic predisposition, autoimmune disorders, smoking etc. But do you know that being underweight can also cause premature menopause occurrence?
Although we've heard hundreds of times that excessive weight and obesity can aggravate menopause symptoms and cause numerous health problems, being underweight may be also harmful for your health.
According to the study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, women, who had body mass index, lower than 18.5, at any point of their lives, were 30% more likely to experience menopause before 45 years old.
Nearly 80 000 women between 25 and 42 years, engaged in the Nurses’ Health Study II, took part in this research. From 1989 to 2011 they were asked to fill the questionnaire about their weight, height and menopausal state every two years.
It was found that women with normal BMI (between 18.5 and 24.9 kilograms per square meter) had lower risks of premature menopause, than those who were underweight at any age.
Moreover, those, who had lost 9 kg or more within the age of 18 to 30 years, were more than twice at risk of early menopause.
It's interesting that women with excessive weight (BMI>25) had 21-30% lower chances of early cutdown of estrogen and progesterone production. The reason is that adipose tissue has ability to synthesize certain amount of reproductive hormone estrogen, that helps delay menopause development.
Just imagine that underweight women at the age of 35 have about 59% higher risks of premature menopause! Don't overdo with grueling diets, as it can speed up your aging and bring harm to your health.
